The Number One Barrier to Reaching Your Goals: Lying to Yourself
If you can’t keep a simple promise to yourself—like setting an alarm and getting up when you said you would—how can you expect to achieve your bigger goals? While this might sound overly simplistic, it’s a reality I’ve seen unfold repeatedly in coaching hundreds of leaders this year alone. The greatest danger leaders face isn’t external obstacles—it’s the lies they tell themselves about what’s possible.
Let me ask: how often have you told yourself something like this?
- “I’m going to change that lightbulb in the garage this week.”
- “I’ll call my friend and plan that trip.”
- “I’m starting my business to create freedom and impact.”
- “I won’t settle for mediocre leadership and will find a new job.”
And yet, those promises often remain unfulfilled.
When you repeatedly fail to keep your word—to yourself and others—you erode trust in yourself. This pattern isn’t just self-deception; it’s self-sabotage. You don’t reach your goals because you no longer believe in your own ability to follow through. You miss out on a passionate marriage because you don’t honor your word to your spouse. You lose business opportunities because your partners sense your lack of integrity—whether it’s not replying to a message or failing to close the loop on a commitment.
The Foundation of Leadership and Success: Integrity
True leadership begins with integrity—keeping your word. First to yourself, then to your marriage, and then to your business and professional relationships. “Trust is the fuel for all of life.” Henry Cloud
As we close out this year, I challenge you to reflect on this:
- How many lies have you told yourself?
- What promises have you made and broken?
- What is the value of your word as you look ahead?
When you become a person who is impeccable with your word, you’ll notice profound changes in your life, love, and leadership.
At Lead Wholeheartedly, my mission is to guide leaders who are ready to live with deep integrity and fulfill their true potential. Whether it’s building a thriving marriage, creating a business with greater impact, or becoming the leader you were meant to be, I’m here to help.
